Tamales are really simple once you get past the wierd stuff used to make them.Strip #565

When I was growing up, there were some kids who lived two blocks up from us. There were a lot of duplexes so it was strange. And now the house across the street from me lives a Mexican lady who makes tamales. Since I can make them myself now, we don’t get them as much. But on X-Mas morning we buy some and they are sooooo good.

We head down to Mexicantown in Detroit every now and then just to get a bunch of tamales. In fact, that sounds like a pretty good plan for the weekend.

  2. I’ve never had a tamale. Until I watched a “Good Eats” on them last summer, I didn’t know what they were (though I knew of the “Hot Tamales” candy, which now is quite obviously nowhere near what the real deal is). I think there’s a reasonably rustic Mexican place downtown now, but Canada’s not usually the place to find truly authentic Latin American cuisine – well, not in the small towns. London, Ontario – where I went to university for a while – had a tremendous Guatemalan place downtown with excellent pupusas. I could really go for one now…

(I’m sure the timestamp makes this clear – I’m reading backwards right now. I need to get caught up and be good about remembering to read this daily!)

The first non-candy tamales were Old ElPaso out of a can. They’re not too bad. But with the huge influx of Mexicans in to Colorado in the late 90’s and 00’s, I’ve found Mexican cusine made by real Mexicans is so much better. Tamales are real easy to make too.
