Genuine Draft: Year 1
Page No.16

Strip # 210 Updated On 5/11/09
When checking the original notes for this strip, I had all sorts of special effects going on. I really wasn’t in the mood to do all of them, and I feel that everything would have been way to cluttered. I like how it all turned out. Not bad for a comic over a year old.

Big guns and cool perspectives. I love how the third panel turnedout. I used black and white painted over each other in the general flight path of the rocket. Then with the smudge tool giving it the blended look and some depth. The actual rocket fired is a copy of one from the first panel manipulated with some perspective, given some flames and smoke. CGI magic.

Panel 2 uses my favorite explosion, erased and resized to fit what I need. The leg is really separated, the lower part that’s blown off is attached to the tree. Makes it look good.

I’m writng this on June 1st 2009, a few weeks after it’s been posted, and I just noticed I forgot to add the smoke and fire. From 210 to 220 were the last of the original Friction Fit Theatre strips which I used to make the BattleMark strips from. They were all in a flattened Photoshop format which was then imported into Illustrator for the word balloons and words. It was a pain to get things to look like the rest of Genuine Draft.

Since this was filmed, in May 2008 or earlier, I’ve gotten a better idea how to make things look good set wise. I’d add more detail such as rocks and plants, of course I have more of those things now. I did learn how to focus the camera to get the picture I want. Don’t always remember though. (220’s had a bunch of reshoots for this reason.)

I think I’ve mentioned it before but small sets are really limiting to shoot in. The border set is still assembled even though it’s been a year since it was first used. I’ve kept it together incase I needed it. The story arc following Battlemark originally was going to use the set extensively. I have nearly 50 strips written. But when I shelved the original version, I didn’t know if I was going to keep them or not. When writting out the time shift storyline, (won’t finish til 2010 by the way) I went in a different direction and won’t be using this set. Time to tear it down.

Split screens of communications sound good on paper. Easy to do when drawing them. But photographing them? Takes alot of planning and adds extra filming. These are filmed on the same set at different times. Jordon and Tay had their stuff filmed until the end, then I redressed the set for all of the battle with Solomeade troopers and their operation. A lot of work and planning. Many notes in the scripts. It works, I’m sure I could better now, experiance points were earned.

I was asked through an email what Jordon meant by “sanizing the area”. For those who don’t know, he’s making sure the guys who are dead are really dead and that the bodies are burned and there is nothing important for someone to use.

Again a set of pictures with no effects or dialog. Normally I’d take a few pictures of General Chambord against a black background, then erase it to get just him. I didn’t have any predone so I had to find some of him in a strip and erase the background around him. A few photoshop tricks and a working tablet to get it done.

Once again I had to do special effects I forgot about or didn’t finish when these were done originally. When you do these enough they get easier to do on the fly. But the thing that made me gumble were the ammount I had to do that I wasn’t expecting to do.

Strip # 220 Updated On 5/21/09
Finally, something simple. Strip 220 was originally written this way. So it was put together this way. Just the guys doing whatever it was at the end of the original chapter. And this ends Battlemark Pt.1.

I Am Bob, Wassup? No.221 to No.257

From here to eternity, these are new pics. Yippee. I had to rebuild this set. It was turned into Tyler’s spaceship prior to the time displacement. I also had to remake Solo’s father. When these were originally posted they were in black and white, I was having trouble trying to do a flashback. Sepia was my choice but couldn’t get there. Once I got to strip 227 I figured it out. So I redid them and like the way they came out. And 15 months ago was right before Mylar was invaded.

Rimminion Male and Pudari Female? I wonder who it could be?

Strip # 223 Updated On 5/24/09
When picturing the scenes of Solomeade and his Father, I keep thinking of Mel Gibson’s movie Braveheart. Pudari’s are nearly extinct in this timeline.
